Dr Sheila Garrity

Dr Sheila Garrity completed her PhD at the UNESCO Child & Family Research Centre, NUI Galway, in 2013. Her research explored relationship development between parents, and early childhood educators and providers, in the Irish Early Childhood Education and Care field. Her MA (Family Support Studies) dissertation (2009) examined the journey of women of African heritage, in developing home-based childminding service in the west of Ireland. Sheila's undergraduate studies in Early Childhood Education and Care took place in Toronto in the late 1980s. She has worked as an early childhood educator, development officer, researcher and lecturer in the ECEC field, for over 35 years.

About this Speaker

Dr Sheila Garrity has been the Academic Director of Early Childhood Programmes at NUI Galway for over a decade. She is a senior researcher at the UNESCO Child & Family Research Centre, and Lecturer at the School of Political Science & Sociology, NUI Galway. Sheila holds a number of leadership roles within the ECEC field in Ireland, including being Chair of PLE, the association of academics and degree courses at HEIs dedicated to the Early Childhood field, since 2020.
